The Discovery of the New World by Columbus on October 12, 1492 is depicted by Artist John Vanderlyn. As Christopher Columbus plants the flag of Spain, the brothers Pinzon hold other standards, and a Franciscan Friar bearing a crucifix stands directly behind the Admiral of the Seas. The 12´x 18´painting placed in the Rotunda on January 15, 1847. U.S. Capitol Historical Society, Washington.
